The Eight Parts of Speech

Dalam pelajaran Bahasa Indonesia kita mengenal istilah 'jenis-jenis kata', mulai dari kata benda, kata sifat, kata kerja dan seterusnya. Begitu pula dalam Bahasa Inggris, ada istilah serupa yang bernama 'Part of Speech' atau lebih dikenal sebagai 'The Eight Parts Of Speech'.
Memahami The Eight Parts of Speech, akan sangat membantu kita dalam mempelajari Bahasa Inggris.
Dalam keseharian kita menggunakan ribuan kata, yang jika dikelompokkan maka kata-kata itu akan masuk ke dalam delapan (8) kategori. Apa saja kategori itu? Yuuk kita telaah satu per satu

1. Pronoun (Kata Ganti)
Pronoun berfungsi untuk menggantikan kata benda baik orang maupun sesuatu

Contoh :
- She studies English everyday.
- This book is yours.
- My father is a teacher.
- He did it by himself.

2.  Noun (Kata Benda)
 Noun berfungsi untuk menamai orang, benda, hewan, tempat, dan konsep abstrak.
Contoh :
- We plan to study English next year
- These are your books.
- I like ice cream very much
- There are five students in the room.

3. Verb (Kata Kerja)
Verb berfungsi untuk menyatakan tindakan dari subject, menunjukkan peristiwa, atau keadaan.
Contoh :
-  I went to Jakarta last month
-  He wants some water.
-  She called me this morning.
-  We live in Purwokerto.

4. Adverb (Kata Keterangan)
Adverb berfungsi untuk menerangkan verb, adjective, maupun adverb lainnya.
Contoh : 
- I saw them yesterday
- They are very talented.
- He speaks English fluently
- Have you eaten yet?

5. Adjective (Kata Sifat)
Adjective digunakan untuk menerangkan noun atau pronoun
Contoh:
- She is very beautiful.
- They live in a big house.
- That's a very expensive car. 
- He is very talented. 


6. Preposition (Kata Depan)
Preposition dikombinasikan dengan noun atau pronoun untuk membentuk phrase (prepositional phrase) yang menerangkan verb, noun, atau adjective.
Contoh :
- I have been studying English for two hours
- They are in my room now
- My Mom is from Jakarta
- We live under the same sun

7. Conjunction (Kata Sambung)
Conjunction menghubungkan dua kata (word), frase (phrase) atau klausa (clause).
Contoh : 
- My hobbies are dancing and singing.
- She is not only smart but also beautiful.
- Both of Lina and Lisa were very happy.
- Do you want tea or milk?

8.  Interjection (Kata Seru)
Interjection digunakan untuk mengungkapkan emosi
Contoh : 
- Wow!
- Oh, no! Don't do that again.
- Oops!
- Yeah!
